A lacquered wooden temple gong (mokugyo) made of hollow wood using cypress (hinoki) in the shape of a fish, this is struck with a padded club and used in Buddhist temples.
The fish is an important symbol in Zen Buddhism, since fish never sleep and are forever aware and watchful. Very Zen!
