Ejiko is a basket knitted with straw that used to sit on a futon so that children wouldn't get cold in the long Tohoku winter.
Here the motif is plum blossom which flowers in late February and early March. The blossom symbolizes the end of winter. Here the design is painted in the style of sumi-e - traditional Japanese ink painting done with ink made from the charcoal ash of bamboo.
