Handcrafted Taiko "Ogre" Drums  Drumming plays a vital and fundamental part in the arts and rituals of Japan. The drums offered here are the same as those used in the stage arts of noh and kabuki, as well as in folk music. These handcrafted “ogre drums” (as this kind is known) are made-in-Japan the way they have been for centuries. Leather is stretched over a body of Japanese zelkova wood, and then tuned by being drawn taut by means of hemp rope or iron bolts. The ogre drum features a sturdier construction than usual, with thicker leather and the very toughest section of zelkova trunk, for the most powerful and resonant tone – a tone in which you can hear the many voices of Japan’s oldest tales and dramas. An alternative to using rope is using bolts, which have the advantage of longevity and solidness. While perhaps not quite as “folk”-looking as the more elaborate rope technique, the use of bolts reduces the need for periodic tuning. Of the taiko drums offered here, one uses rope and the other bolts. They are 35 cm (13 4/5 in) in diameter. Drumsticks are also available in two sizes. |
