Mokugyo - Wooden Temple Gong 05

A lacquered wooden temple gong (mokugyo) made of hollow wood using cypress (hinoki) in the shape of a fish, this is struck with a padded club and used in Buddhist temples.

The fish is an important symbol in Zen Buddhism, since fish never sleep and are forever aware and watchful. Very Zen!

The piece is probably Showa or Taisho Period and has a great resonating sound. There is slight wear, which is usual for such an instrument.
